Commonly known as:

Description of Plant:
Arroyo Lupine is an annual wildflower native to California and parts of the southwestern United States. It features tall spires of vivid blue to purple pea-like flowers that bloom in spring, set above soft green foliage composed of finger-like leaflets. Known for its beauty and adaptability, this lupine is not only eye-catching but also beneficial for local ecosystems by attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Growth Habit:
Arroyo Lupine typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall and about 1 to 2 feet wide. It has an upright, bushy habit and thrives in wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, or along slopes and roadsides. It’s best used as a seasonal bedding plant or for naturalizing large sunny areas.

Watering Instructions:
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant, especially in cooler months. Avoid overwatering, particularly in clay soils.

Soil Needs:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil, though it will tolerate clay if drainage is adequate. It does not require rich soil and often thrives in nutrient-poor conditions. No additional soil amendments are typically necessary.

Sun Requirements:
Full sun is ideal for best flowering. It may tolerate light shade but can become leggy or produce fewer blooms in low-light settings.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in wildflower gardens, along hillsides, or in native plant landscapes. Not recommended for indoor cultivation due to its size and light requirements. Protect from frost by planting after the last frost date in spring.

Perennial or Annual:
Annual in most climates, completing its lifecycle within one growing season. Can reseed itself under favorable conditions.

Additional Tips:
Sow seeds directly in the fall or early spring for best results. Scarify seeds lightly or soak overnight to improve germination. Arroyo Lupine is nitrogen-fixing, meaning it enriches the soil around it—great for companion planting. Watch for powdery mildew in overly humid conditions.
