Description

Commonly known as:
Rattlesnake Plant, Calathea lancifolia

Description of Plant:
Calathea lancifolia, also known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is a tropical beauty native to Brazil. Its long, narrow leaves feature a dramatic pattern of dark green and light green stripes, with purple undersides, resembling the skin of a rattlesnake. As a member of the Marantaceae family, it has a distinctive habit of folding its leaves upward at night. It thrives in humid environments and makes an excellent addition to both low-light and bright spaces.

Growth Habit:
Grows up to 2–3 feet tall and about 1–2 feet wide. The long, lance-shaped leaves stand upright on slender stems, creating a full, bushy appearance.

Watering Instructions:
Prefers consistently moist soil but should not be soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Calathea plants are sensitive to chlorine and fluoride, so it’s best to use distilled or non-chlorinated water if possible.

Soil Needs:
Well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture but doesn’t become waterlogged. A mix for tropical plants or houseplants works well.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so it’s best kept out of direct sun.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Ideal for indoor spaces with high humidity, such as bathrooms or kitchens. Outdoors, it can be kept in shaded, warm environments but is not frost-tolerant.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in suitable climates, particularly in USDA zones 10–12. In colder climates, it is typically grown as a houseplant.

Additional Tips:
To maintain the plant’s vibrant colors, ensure it receives the right amount of humidity (60% or higher). It benefits from regular misting or a humidity tray. Remove dead or damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
