Description
Commonly known as:
Tornado Dracaena, Curly Dracaena, Spiral Dracaena
Description of Plant:
Dracaena ‘Tornado’ is a compact cultivar known for its unique rosette of tightly curled, glossy green leaves with light cream to yellow variegated edges. The twisting foliage gives it a whirlwind or “tornado” appearance, making it a standout feature in any indoor plant collection. It is a slow-growing, upright plant that stays tidy and is ideal for smaller spaces.
Growth Habit:
This plant grows upright with a tight, spiral leaf arrangement. Typically stays under 12–18 inches tall, making it perfect for shelves, desks, and windowsills.
Watering Instructions:
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering and ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil Needs:
Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard indoor soil blend mixed with perlite or bark works well.
Sun Requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light conditions, but leaf color will be more vibrant in brighter spots. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Primarily an indoor plant due to its tropical nature. Keep away from cold drafts and avoid outdoor placement unless temperatures are consistently warm.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial when grown indoors or in warm climates.
Additional Tips:
Wipe leaves occasionally to keep them dust-free and allow for better light absorption. Dracaena can be sensitive to fluoride in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water is ideal.
