Description

Commonly known as:
Bird’s Nest Fern, Asplenium nidus

Description of Plant:
Bird’s Nest Fern is a striking epiphytic fern native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Unlike traditional ferns with delicate, feathery leaves, this species features broad, leathery, apple-green fronds with gently rippled edges. The fronds radiate from a nest-like center, giving the plant its name. Its elegant, simple form makes it a favorite for modern and tropical-themed interiors.

Growth Habit:
Typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and wide when kept indoors, forming a symmetrical, vase-like shape. It’s best suited for tabletops, plant stands, or as a dramatic understory plant in tropical gardens. It can grow larger in ideal outdoor conditions.

Watering Instructions:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water around the edges of the pot, avoiding the central rosette to prevent rot. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Increase humidity for best results.

Soil Needs:
Prefers a loose, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix for ferns or a blend of peat, perlite, and bark works well. Avoid heavy or compacted soils.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds. Tolerates lower light but may grow more slowly.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Primarily grown as a houseplant. Can be placed outdoors in shaded, humid spots during warm months but must be protected from direct sun and cold temperatures. Not frost-tolerant.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial when grown indoors or in warm, frost-free climates.

Additional Tips:
Enjoys high humidity—ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. Mist regularly or use a pebble tray to increase moisture. Wipe dust from leaves occasionally. Propagation is difficult; division is rarely successful due to the plant’s single growing point.
