Description

Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’ is a striking variegated form of the Elephant Bush. It features small, round, fleshy leaves with green centers and creamy white to pink margins. The reddish-brown stems provide a striking contrast to the foliage. This plant is highly adaptable, thriving as a low-maintenance houseplant, in hanging baskets, or as a bonsai specimen. In warm climates, it can be grown outdoors as a spreading ground cover or a shrubby accent plant. It is native to South Africa and is often used in soil conservation efforts due to its ability to store water in its leaves.

Commonly Known As:
Variegated Elephant Bush, Rainbow Elephant Bush, Mini Jade Plant

Growth Habit:

  • Grows as a semi-trailing or upright shrub, reaching up to 3–4 feet tall.
  • Spreads outward, making it great for cascading over containers or as ground cover.

  • Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • More frequent watering is needed in summer, while minimal watering is required in winter.

Soil Needs:

  • Prefers well-draining, sandy, or succulent soil mix.
  • Avoid heavy, moisture-retaining soils to prevent root rot.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:

  • Indoor: Place near a bright window with ample indirect light.
  • Outdoor: Performs well in xeriscape gardens, rock gardens, or as a patio plant.
