Description
Commonly known as:
Texas Sage, Autumn Sage, Furman’s Red
Description of Plant:
‘Furman’s Red’ is a compact, woody shrub featuring small, glossy green leaves that emit a pleasant fragrance. Its upright stems are adorned with tubular, deep red flowers that bloom profusely in repeated flushes from late spring through autumn. The plant maintains a tidy, mounding form, making it suitable for borders, rock gardens, and containers.
Growth Habit:
Typically grows 2–3 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, forming a dense, rounded mound.
Watering Instructions:
Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially in poorly drained soils.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or rocky types. Tolerates poor soils but does not perform well in heavy clay unless amended for drainage.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer blooms.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best suited for outdoor cultivation. Not recommended for indoor growing due to its need for ample sunlight and space to spread.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in USDA zones 6–10. In colder zones, it may die back in winter but can regrow from the roots in spring.
Additional Tips:
-
Prune back by one-third in late winter or early spring to encourage bushier growth and more prolific flowering.
-
Deadhead spent blooms to extend the flowering period.
-
Deer and rabbit resistant, making it a good choice for wildlife-prone areas.
-
Excellent for xeriscaping and low-maintenance landscapes.
