Description

Commonly known as:
Staghorn Fern, Elkhorn Fern, Platycerium bifurcatum

Description of Plant:
The Staghorn Fern features two distinct types of fronds: flat, shield fronds that protect the roots and help the plant anchor to surfaces, and long, branching antler fronds that resemble the horns of a deer. It grows naturally on trees and rocks and thrives in bright, filtered light with good air circulation.

Growth Habit:
Epiphytic and upright to cascading in habit. Can grow quite large with fronds reaching up to 3 feet in length in ideal conditions.

Watering Instructions:
Water by soaking or thoroughly misting once or twice a week, depending on humidity. Allow to dry slightly between waterings. Do not let it sit in standing water.

Soil Needs:
Does not require traditional soil. Mount on wood with sphagnum moss or grow in a very loose, bark-heavy orchid mix.

Sun Requirements:
Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the fronds.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Can be grown indoors in bright rooms or outdoors in shaded, humid environments. Protect from frost.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in warm climates or as an indoor plant.

Additional Tips:

  • Ideal for mounting or hanging displays.

  • Increase humidity for best growth.

  • Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted liquid fertilizer.
