For the best results, we recommend planting 7 to 12 milkweed plants together. Monarch butterflies are more likely to stop and lay eggs when they see a cluster of milkweed rather than isolated plants.

Monarchs have specialized compound eyes that are excellent at detecting motion and color from above. When flying overhead, they look for dense patches of host plants, which appear more attractive and easier to locate than single plants spread out across a yard. A grouping not only helps monarchs find the milkweed—it also increases the chances of successful egg-laying and caterpillar survival.

Plant in sunny spots and space plants about 12–18 inches apart for a natural-looking, butterfly-friendly display.
