Description

Commonly known as:
California Poppy, Golden Poppy, Cup of Gold, California Sunlight

Description of Plant:
This low-growing plant features finely divided, blue-green foliage and produces solitary, four-petaled flowers that close at night or during cloudy weather. The blooms, typically 2–3 inches in diameter, appear in spring and can continue into early summer, especially in cooler climates. The plant’s delicate appearance belies its hardiness and adaptability.
Grows 12–15 inches tall and spreads 12–18 inches wide, forming a loose, mounding shape.

Watering Instructions:
Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot; allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil Needs:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soils. Avoid heavy clay soils, which can retain too much moisture.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Flowers may not open fully in shaded conditions.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best suited for outdoor cultivation in gardens, borders, or containers. Not typically grown indoors due to its need for ample sunlight.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in USDA zones 8–10; often grown as an annual in cooler climates.

Additional Tips:

  • Sow seeds directly in the garden in early spring or fall; the plant does not transplant well due to its taproot.

  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering.

  • Self-seeds readily, allowing it to return year after year with minimal intervention.

  • Attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, enhancing garden biodiversity.
