Description
Commonly known as:
Prayer Plant, Prayer Plant Lime, Maranta leuconeura
Description of Plant:
This variety of Maranta features oval-shaped leaves with a deep green base and vivid lime green veins running symmetrically along the midrib. The undersides are a soft maroon, adding even more visual interest. Known for its nightly leaf-folding behavior, the Prayer Plant is both interactive and decorative.
Growth Habit:
Low-growing and spreading, reaching about 6–12 inches tall. Makes an excellent table or hanging plant due to its trailing habit over time.
Watering Instructions:
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch feels dry. Prefers filtered or distilled water to avoid leaf spotting from minerals.
Soil Needs:
Loose, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A peat-based mix with perlite or orchid bark works well.
Sun Requirements:
Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade or scorch the leaves.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Thrives as an indoor plant. Outdoors, it can grow in shaded patios in warm, humid climates. Keep away from drafts and cold air.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial as a houseplant or in tropical environments.
Additional Tips:
-
Appreciates higher humidity; mist regularly or use a humidity tray.
-
Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
-
Wipe leaves occasionally to keep them dust-free and healthy.
