Description
Commonly known as:
Prayer Plant, Red Prayer Plant, Maranta leuconeura
Description of Plant:
The Red Prayer Plant is admired for its stunning oval-shaped foliage, which features a deep green background with a herringbone pattern of bright red veins. The undersides of the leaves are a rich burgundy, adding drama and beauty from every angle. This plant is especially interactive—its leaves fold up at dusk and reopen with the morning light.
Growth Habit:
Low-growing and spreading, typically reaching 6–12 inches in height. Over time, it may trail, making it perfect for shelves or hanging baskets.
Watering Instructions:
Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, using distilled or rainwater to avoid leaf discoloration.
Soil Needs:
Prefers a well-draining, peat-based soil mix with added perlite or orchid bark to promote aeration and moisture retention.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves and fade the vibrant coloring.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best suited for indoor growing. Can be placed outdoors in shaded, warm, and humid areas during summer, but must be brought in when temperatures drop.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial when grown as a houseplant or in warm, tropical climates.
Additional Tips:
-
Loves humidity—consider misting or using a humidity tray.
-
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
-
Gently clean leaves to enhance photosynthesis and reduce pests.
