Commonly known as:
Compact White Sage, White Sage ‘Compacta’
Description of Plant:
Salvia apiana ‘Compacta’ is a smaller, more garden-friendly form of white sage native to California’s coastal sage scrub. It features silvery-white, highly aromatic leaves and tall flowering spikes that attract pollinators.
Growth Habit:
A rounded, evergreen shrub typically reaching about 2–3 feet tall and wide, with a naturally dense and compact form compared to standard white sage.
Watering Instructions:
Water deeply but infrequently once established. Allow soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot and encourage strong drought tolerance.
Soil Needs:
Prefers very well-draining, sandy or rocky soil. Excellent drainage is essential for long-term health.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct light daily for best growth and flowering.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in garden beds, slopes, or large containers. Not well-suited for long-term indoor growing due to high light needs.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.
Additional Tips:
A powerful pollinator plant that attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Avoid overwatering and do not fertilize heavily to preserve its natural form and fragrance.
