Description
Commonly known as:
Chocolate Daisy, Chocolate Flower, Lyreleaf Greeneyes
Description of Plant:
Berlandiera lyrata is a charming perennial wildflower known for its cheerful yellow, daisy-like blooms and delightful chocolate fragrance. Native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, this heat-loving plant thrives in sunny, dry landscapes. Its flowers release a rich cocoa-like scent, especially during the morning hours. In addition, the bright blooms attract native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making Chocolate Daisy a wonderful addition to Southern California gardens.
Growth Habit:
This compact, mounding perennial typically grows 12–18 inches tall and 12–24 inches wide. Its soft, gray-green foliage forms a loose clump, while slender flower stalks rise above the leaves.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid excessive moisture, especially during cooler months.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy, rocky, or gravelly soil. It thrives in lean soils and does not require heavy fertilization.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In extremely hot inland areas, light afternoon shade may help extend flowering.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in pollinator gardens, rock gardens, borders, and water-wise landscapes. Plant it near patios, pathways, or seating areas where visitors can enjoy its unique chocolate fragrance.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California. It may die back during colder winter weather but typically returns from its roots in spring.
Additional Tips:
Fragrant: Chocolate Daisy releases a sweet, chocolate-like aroma from its flowers, especially in the morning. Native bees and butterflies visit the blooms for nectar and pollen. In addition, removing spent flowers encourages continued blooming, while leaving some seed heads allows the plant to reseed naturally.
