Description of Plant:
Solidago californica is a California native perennial that produces bright golden-yellow flower clusters from late summer through fall. During a time when many plants have finished blooming, it provides an abundant nectar source for butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects. In addition, Goldenrod is one of the best native pollinator plants for late summer and fall because it serves as a keystone nectar source, supporting wildlife when floral resources become scarce.
Growth Habit:
This upright, clump-forming perennial grows 2–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. It spreads gradually by rhizomes to form attractive colonies that work well in naturalized gardens and meadows.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. It tolerates extended dry periods after becoming established.
Soil Needs:
Adaptable to sandy, rocky, loamy, and clay soils with good drainage. It thrives in a wide range of Southern California garden conditions.
Sun Requirements:
Performs best in full sun but tolerates light afternoon shade, especially in hotter inland locations.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in native gardens, pollinator habitats, meadows, and restoration plantings. Allow space for natural spreading or divide mature clumps every few years to maintain vigor.

California Goldenrod provides essential nectar for migrating butterflies and countless native bee species. Medicinal: Native American tribes and herbalists have traditionally used the leaves and flowers in teas and topical preparations to support urinary health, soothe sore throats, and ease minor inflammation. Although not commonly grown as an edible plant, the flowers have occasionally been used to make herbal tea.
