Description of Plant:
Fragaria vesca is a charming perennial strawberry with delicate white flowers, bright green leaves, and small, intensely flavorful red berries. It creates an attractive edible groundcover while providing fruit for people and wildlife. In addition, its flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, making Woodland Strawberry a useful addition to edible and wildlife-friendly gardens.
Growth Habit:
This low-growing perennial typically reaches 4–8 inches tall and spreads 12–24 inches wide. It forms tidy clumps and can gradually spread to create a lush groundcover.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment and fruit production. Keep the soil moderately moist but not soggy, especially during warm Southern California weather.
Soil Needs:
Prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Adding compost helps retain moisture and encourages healthy growth and fruit production.
Sun Requirements:
Grows well in morning sun, partial shade, or filtered light. In warmer inland areas, protect plants from intense afternoon sun.
