Commonly known as:
Coastal Gumweed, Coastal Gumplant, Oregon Gumweed

Description of Plant:
Grindelia stricta is a California native perennial known for its cheerful golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers and distinctive sticky flower buds. Native to coastal habitats, this hardy plant tolerates salt spray, wind, and challenging growing conditions. From summer into fall, its bright blooms provide nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. In addition, Coastal Gumweed supports wildlife when many spring-blooming plants have finished flowering.

Growth Habit:
This spreading, evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial typically grows 1–3 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide. Its branching stems form a loose, rounded shape with thick green leaves and bright yellow flowers.

Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Coastal Gumweed tolerates summer drought, although occasional watering can extend flowering.

Soil Needs:
Thrives in sandy, rocky, and well-draining soils. It also tolerates coastal soils with salt exposure and relatively poor fertility.

Sun Requirements:
Prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plenty of sunshine encourages strong growth and abundant flowering.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in coastal gardens, native landscapes, pollinator habitats, and naturalized areas. It works especially well on slopes, near pathways, and in gardens exposed to ocean breezes.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.

Additional Tips:
Coastal Gumweed provides valuable late-season nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Medicinal: Various Grindelia species have a history of traditional herbal use, especially in preparations for coughs and respiratory discomfort. However, medicinal applications vary by species, and this plant is best grown for its ornamental and ecological value. The sticky resin on its flower buds is a natural characteristic of gumweed.
