Description
Commonly known as:
Coastal Plantain, Slender Plantain, California Plantain
Description of Plant:
Plantago elongata is a small California native annual valued for its ecological importance in butterfly habitats. Its narrow green leaves form low rosettes, while slender flower spikes rise above the foliage. Although its tiny flowers appear modest, they provide resources for small beneficial insects. Most importantly, Coastal Plantain serves as a host plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly. As a result, it makes a valuable addition to Southern California butterfly and native wildflower gardens.
Growth Habit:
This low-growing annual typically reaches 4–12 inches tall, including its flower stalks. It forms small rosettes and produces upright, slender seed spikes. Under favorable conditions, plants may reseed naturally.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during germination and establishment. Once established, provide occasional light watering during active growth. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil. However, it adapts to a variety of native soils, including compacted or nutrient-poor areas.
Sun Requirements:
Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In warmer inland areas, light afternoon shade can help extend the growing season.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in butterfly gardens, native wildflower meadows, and naturalized landscapes. Plant it among other low-growing natives where butterfly caterpillars can feed without disturbance.
Perennial or Annual:
Annual in Southern California. It typically grows during the cooler, wetter months and completes its life cycle as conditions become hot and dry.
Additional Tips:
Butterfly Host Plant: Coastal Plantain provides food for Common Buckeye butterfly caterpillars. Female butterflies may lay eggs on the foliage, allowing caterpillars to feed and develop. In addition, leaving some plants to produce seed encourages natural regeneration. Avoid pesticides, especially when caterpillars are present.
