Description of Plant:
Penstemon eatonii is a western native perennial known for its brilliant scarlet-red, tubular flowers that rise above attractive green foliage. From spring into early summer, the vivid flower spikes create a dramatic display while providing nectar for hummingbirds. In addition, its heat and drought tolerance make Firecracker Penstemon an excellent choice for sunny, water-wise gardens in Southern California.
Growth Habit:
This upright perennial typically grows 2–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide when flowering. It forms a leafy basal clump and sends up tall flower stalks covered with vivid red blooms.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly while establishing. Once established, water deeply but infrequently and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid excessive summer irrigation.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy, rocky, or gravelly soil. Lean soil and excellent drainage encourage strong growth and a longer-lived plant.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun. In very hot inland locations, it can tolerate some light afternoon shade.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in native gardens, rock gardens, slopes, and pollinator plantings. Its upright flower spikes work especially well toward the middle or back of a perennial border.

Firecracker Penstemon is an outstanding hummingbird plant because its brilliant red tubular flowers provide an inviting nectar source. In addition, native bees may visit the flowers. Remove spent flower stalks for a tidier appearance, or leave some to mature if you want the plant to reseed.
