Description
Commonly known as:
Margarita BOP Beardtongue, Foothill Penstemon
Description of Plant:
Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Margarita BOP’ is a vigorous selection of California foothill penstemon, admired for its vivid electric blue to violet flowers and evergreen blue-green foliage. Blooming from spring into early summer, it creates a striking display in native and drought-tolerant landscapes while providing an excellent nectar source for hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees.
Growth Habit:
This compact, mounding perennial grows 18–24 inches tall and 24–36 inches wide. It spreads gradually to form a colorful mass of foliage and flowers, making it ideal for borders, slopes, and rock gardens.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid excessive summer irrigation.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy, rocky, or gravelly soils. Good drainage is essential for long-term health.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun and performs best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in native plant gardens, pollinator habitats, borders, and containers. Prune spent flower stalks after blooming to encourage a tidy appearance and occasional rebloom.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.
Additional Tips:
One of the best California native perennials for attracting hummingbirds. It pairs beautifully with salvias, buckwheats, California fuchsia, and other drought-tolerant natives.
