Description
Commonly known as:
Mrs. Beard Sage, Mrs. Beard California Sage, Mrs. Beard Creeping Sage
Description of Plant:
Salvia sonomensis × mellifera ‘Mrs. Beard’ is a California native hybrid combining the low-growing habit of creeping sage with the toughness of black sage. Its aromatic foliage and spring display of lavender flowers make it an excellent choice for naturalistic landscapes.
Growth Habit:
A spreading evergreen perennial reaching about 1–2 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide. It creates a dense mat that helps suppress weeds and stabilize slopes.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between irrigations.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining soil and thrives in sandy, rocky, or native California soils.
Sun Requirements:
Performs best in full sun but tolerates light shade, especially in hotter inland locations.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors as a groundcover on slopes, banks, and native landscapes. Provide adequate space for its wide spread.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.
Additional Tips:
An excellent habitat plant for pollinators and beneficial insects. Its drought tolerance and erosion-control qualities make it especially valuable in low-water landscapes.
