Description

Commonly known as:
California Goldenrod, Velvet Goldenrod

Description of Plant:
Solidago velutina ssp. californica is a California native perennial that produces bright golden-yellow flower clusters from late summer through fall. It adds bold color to the garden while feeding butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects. Goldenrod ranks among the best native pollinator plants for late summer and fall. Many gardeners consider it a keystone nectar source because it blooms after many other native plants have finished flowering.

Medicinal: Traditionally used by Native American tribes and herbalists to prepare teas and topical remedies for minor inflammation, urinary support, and sore throats. It should be used only with proper identification and guidance.

Growth Habit:
This upright, clump-forming perennial grows 2–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. It spreads gradually by rhizomes to create attractive colonies in naturalized landscapes.

Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water occasionally with deep soakings, allowing the soil to dry between irrigations.

Soil Needs:
Adaptable to sandy, loamy, rocky, and clay soils provided they are well-drained. It performs well in a wide range of California garden conditions.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun but will tolerate light afternoon shade, particularly in hotter inland areas.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in native gardens, pollinator habitats, meadows, and restoration plantings. Allow room for natural spreading or divide clumps periodically to manage size.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.

Additional Tips:
California Goldenrod supports migrating butterflies and countless native pollinators during a critical time of year. Native American tribes and herbalists have traditionally used the leaves and flowers to prepare teas and topical remedies for urinary support, sore throats, and minor inflammation. Plant it in sunny, low-water gardens to enjoy months of blooms and outstanding wildlife value.
