Description

Lepechinia hastata is a striking perennial shrub native to Mexico, including Baja California. It produces tall spikes of vibrant magenta-pink flowers above large, soft, heart-shaped leaves. From summer into fall, the colorful blooms attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. In addition, its fragrant foliage and dramatic flowers make it a beautiful choice for Southern California pollinator gardens.

Growth Habit:
This fast-growing, upright perennial typically reaches 3–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide. Its large leaves and tall flowering stems create a lush, slightly tropical appearance.

Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, provide occasional deep watering and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Additional water during hot summer months helps maintain healthy foliage and flowering.

Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil. It adapts to average garden soils but performs best when excess water drains freely.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter inland areas of Southern California, afternoon shade helps protect the large leaves from intense summer heat.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, and large containers. Give it room to grow and protect it from hard frost in colder inland locations.

Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California. It may die back during cold winters but often regrows from the base when temperatures warm.

Additional Tips:
Fragrant Pitcher Sage is especially attractive to hummingbirds, which visit its nectar-rich magenta flowers. Butterflies and bees also benefit from its extended blooming season. Fragrant: The large, aromatic leaves release a distinctive herbal scent when touched. Prune older stems in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous new growth.
