Description
Commonly known as:
Hummingbird Sage, Pitcher Sage, Crimson Sage
Description of Plant:
Salvia spathacea is a fragrant California native perennial known for its large, aromatic leaves and striking magenta-pink flowers. From late winter through spring, tall flower stalks rise above the foliage and provide nectar for hummingbirds. In addition, its spreading habit makes Hummingbird Sage an excellent groundcover for shaded areas. It brings beautiful color, fragrance, and wildlife value to Southern California gardens.
Growth Habit:
This spreading perennial typically grows 1–2 feet tall, with flower stalks reaching 2–3 feet. It spreads by underground rhizomes and gradually forms dense colonies that help suppress weeds.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, provide occasional deep watering and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. It tolerates summer drought, especially in shaded locations.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining soil but adapts to sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Adding organic matter can help retain moisture in dry, shaded garden areas.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in partial shade to full shade. It also tolerates morning sun, especially in cooler coastal areas of Southern California.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors beneath trees, along shaded pathways, and in woodland-style native gardens. Give it room to spread naturally, or grow it in large containers to control its growth.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California.
Additional Tips:
Hummingbird Sage is one of the best California native plants for attracting hummingbirds to shaded gardens. Its nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source during the cooler months. Fragrant: The large, textured leaves release a sweet, fruity fragrance when touched. Medicinal: Indigenous Californians have traditionally used this sage in herbal preparations, although it is primarily grown today for its ornamental and wildlife value.
