Description

Commonly known as:
Purpletop Vervain, Tall Verbena, Brazilian Verbena, Argentine Vervain

Description of Plant:
Verbena bonariensis is a graceful perennial known for its tall, slender stems and clusters of small purple flowers. From late spring through fall, its nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators. In addition, its airy growth allows sunlight to reach neighboring plants. As a result, Purpletop Vervain adds height and color without overwhelming the garden. This South American native thrives in sunny Southern California landscapes.

Growth Habit:
This upright, fast-growing perennial typically reaches 3–6 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide. Its slender, branching stems create an open, airy appearance. It also self-seeds readily and may form natural colonies.

Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Occasional summer watering encourages continued flowering.

Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining soil but adapts to sandy, loamy, and clay soils with adequate drainage. It tolerates relatively poor soil and does not require heavy fertilization.

Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plenty of sunshine encourages strong stems and abundant flowers.

Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, mixed borders, and pollinator habitats. Plant it among shorter perennials to create layers of color. Its tall, open stems also work beautifully in naturalistic meadow gardens.

Perennial or Annual:
Short-lived perennial in Southern California. It may remain evergreen during mild winters or die back after frost. However, it often returns through self-seeding.

Additional Tips:
Purpletop Vervain is an outstanding nectar plant for butterflies, including monarchs, swallowtails, and skippers. Bees also visit its abundant flowers throughout the growing season. In addition, removing spent blooms can encourage more flowers and reduce unwanted seedlings. Because this species self-seeds aggressively in some regions, monitor its spread and remove unwanted seedlings.
