Description
Commonly known as:
Island Snapdragon, Showy Island Snapdragon
Description of Plant:
Gambelia speciosa is a beautiful California native perennial known for its bright red, tubular flowers and glossy green foliage. Native to the Channel Islands and Baja California, this sprawling plant brings vibrant color to coastal and Southern California gardens. From spring through fall, its nectar-rich blooms attract hummingbirds and add a tropical touch to the landscape. In addition, its long flowering season makes Island Snapdragon a valuable addition to pollinator gardens.
Growth Habit:
This sprawling evergreen perennial typically grows 1–3 feet tall and spreads 3–5 feet wide. Its arching stems create a loose, cascading shape that works beautifully over walls, slopes, and containers.
Watering Instructions:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, provide occasional deep watering and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Moderate summer irrigation can encourage continued flowering, especially in hotter inland gardens.
Soil Needs:
Prefers well-draining sandy, rocky, or loamy soil. Good drainage helps maintain healthy roots, especially during cooler months.
Sun Requirements:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Along the coast, it performs beautifully in full sun. However, inland gardens benefit from some afternoon shade during intense summer heat.
Indoor or Outdoor Tips:
Best grown outdoors in native gardens, coastal landscapes, pollinator habitats, and large containers. Its trailing stems also make it an excellent choice for hanging baskets and retaining walls. Protect young plants from hard frost.
Perennial or Annual:
Perennial in Southern California. It remains evergreen in mild coastal climates but may experience winter dieback in colder inland locations.
Additional Tips:
Island Snapdragon is an excellent hummingbird plant because its bright red, tubular flowers provide a valuable nectar source. In addition, its sprawling growth offers shelter for small garden wildlife. Light pruning encourages fuller growth and helps maintain a tidy shape. It pairs beautifully with California fuchsia, native salvias, and other hummingbird-friendly plants.
